On the other hand, when food handlers do not practice proper food safety, bacteria and chemicals end up contaminating food – which in turn increases the risk getting infected with a foodborne illness.
Thunder Bay Food Safety Certification Training
Thunder Bay Food Safety Certification with training in Thunder Bay First Aid is available in two levels. The first level is a basic course that is the minimum requirement for mandatory food safety training in Thunder Bay. The second level is an advanced course that targets food service workers with managerial or supervisory capacity. All students are awarded training credentials upon completing either of the programs.
Classroom vs. self-study
There are two possible options for students enrolling in food safety training. Classroom lessons are the most popular kind, similar to a lesson at school or other training programs. Self-study programs are a little different. We make our workbooks available to students who do not have time to attend regular classes, such as students who work or are still in school.
They study at their own time and pace and then sign up for a certification exam. In a full classroom lesson, students take the certification exam directly after completing all the lessons in the curriculum.
Basic microbiology
One of the basic concepts we teach our students is microbiology. In order to understand how bacteria causes foodborne illness, the student has to have a basic grasp on microbiology – specifically different microorganisms that may or may not cause disease. We teach students how bacteria can be transmitted among people and in what kind of environment it thrives. These are all factors to consider when learning about foodborne illness and its causes.
Infection control
At Thunder Bay First Aid, we emphasize the importance of infection control in preventing the transmission of infectious microorganisms. Food handlers who do not wash their hands or wear protective gear are the number one source of bacteria that contaminate food. Especially if the food handler is sick or has come into contact with a sick person, there is a chance that he or she will contaminate the food without proper infection control. Hand washing alone is enough to prevent the food handling process from becoming contaminated.
Enrolling in our food safety program is quite easy. The Thunder Bay First Aid website hosts an online form you can fill up (on the website) and submit through the internet. We also encourage prospective students to visit us in person to get a tour of the facility and an introduction to our curriculum.
